Hi Everyone,

I had an unexpectedly exciting stop at Swan Creek in northern Anne Arundel Co. this afternoon. A gorgeous breeding female RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was actively feeding in the north cell - a lovely sight we Swan Creek aficionados have coveted for years. Unfortunately, timing only permitted a quick text to the locals before closing time today. Tim Carney was working on site, and Stan Arnold and Dan Haas arrived before I departed. The site should be open at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow. (See details at the end of this message.)

When I was able to convince myself to continue scanning, I was pleased to note five WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERs on the nearest peninsula in the north cell. These were joined by at two SPOTTED SANDPIPERs, which are surely nesting on the property again this year. (Stan and Ed Carlson have had up to eight on recent surveys.) I was able to quickly locate the continuing drake RING-NECKED DUCK, as well as a drake LESSER SCAUP. Thoroughly scanning the many loafing, molting Mallards led to one final surprise, a female GADWALL.

I hope the phalarope sticks around for a few days and others are able to enjoy her. Truly a stunning bird.

Good birding!

Bill
