Hi all,

Kieran O'Malley asked me to repost this email, which was originally sent to the Pennsylvania birding list.

He says that counties from Hampshire and Hardy (west of Winchester/not far from Cumberland and west of
Strasburg respectively) to the west and south could use observers. In addition, there are the block-busting
weekends coming up.  West Virginia is an under-birded state compared to Maryland, and who knows what surprises
(like the recent Black Rail in Hampshire County) await you? I am thinking about visiting some blocks later this month.

Good birding,

From: Bailey, Richard S Subject: WV Breeding Bird Atlas news and updates - 5/25 Hi all, We are now entering the time when we are within the safe dates of almost all WV
breeding birds! Rather than provide a long list here, I encourage you to visit
the atlas information page or the data portal (listed below) for specifics. As you might suspect, we are extremely busy in the field visiting areas that
are in need of further atlasing. Please contact your regional coordinator
(contact info found at websites below) for directions and help with specific
blocks that are under-counted! In addition: We continue to be in need of help with abundance point counts on priority
blocks. In a nutshell, it involves identifying 5 points in a given priority
block that represent the overall habitat diversity of that block. The atlaser
then visits each point, beginning as early as an hour before official sunrise
and no later than 9AM, and conducts a 10-minute survey. If you would like to
learn more, please contact Donna Mitchell at
Donna.M.Mitchell AT wv.govfor more information.
It's not as hard as you think! We still have several spaces available for our blockbusting events in mid-late
June! We will be birding in the heart of cerulean warbler country in the Ohio
Hills region. There will be a Friday planning dinner each weekend, and lodging
is covered for up to 8 volunteers at each event. Join us! Contact me for more
information. 6/15 - 6/18 AT North Bend State Park near Parkersburg 6/22 - 6/25 AT McClintic WMA near Point Pleasant As always, if you are interested in details about the atlas, please refer to
the following informational website: http://martes.dnr.state.wv.us/BreedingBirdsAtlas/default.aspx The data portal can be accessed here: http://bird.atlasing.org/Atlas/WV/ Thanks, and if you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask. We can't do
this without you! Rich Bailey
