Phil, et al.

This is a problem similar to hawk-counting at hawk-watch sites. The way this is handled is by having an official designated "counter". On the last Pelagic I was on, there were, I think, three designated counters, though less officially so than at a hawkwatch site. They were responsible for compiling the records and entering them into eBird.
I would think this would be appropriate. Metadata would be needed for documentation, especially time the photo was taken, to determine how each photo should be treated.

Processing these documents is no small task, but centrally coordinating this task to reconcile the documentation with the official sightings tally by the talliers is probably the most effective way to do this. The documentation that they can clearly match based on metadata, with official sightings from the trip should be accepted.

I don't know if there were official 1/2-hour block counters on this trip, but perhaps they can step forward if there were.

Subject: [MDBirding] Pelagic records

Hi Folks:

For pelagic trips, such as the one this weekend, where lots of people saw lots of birds and took lots of photos, the task of sorting out and organizing the resulting photos into single or multiple bird records can be problematic (and very time consuming). I need your help and I assume eBird shares these same issues as the records committee.

I hope that someone who was on-board has or will come up with a system to identify the various Black-capped Petrels, Arctic Terns, and Band-rumped Petrels seen by either lat/lon or by time hacks, or some system. Hopefully, one or more of the leaders, who should have the best perspective, can figure out a method to deal with this.

Lots of photos of species that were seen multiple times, just dumped onto web pages without more detailed location or time data, doesn't help in associating photos into specific records.

(Is the feeling that all of the Band-rumpeds should be treated as one record, or multiple records?)

Sorry I missed it ...

Thanks.

Phil
