Ron Pittaway's Winter Finch Forecast usally comes out towards the end of Sept. While Pittaway is Canadian & the focus is on Ontario it is is pretty useful for the eastern US & gets posted to most birding list servers.

Somebody used to provide the finch winter food supply estimation for the North East on MDOsprey. Don't remember who, but it gives a pretty good prognostication (good word for Scrabble) of how far the finches might roam during the coming winter season...

On the Potomac near Weverton this morning were a couple of Osprey, one adult BE, herons & egrets galore incl a Great, C geese, swallows, etc. The Osprey were having better luck than me...
