This morning was the first this Fall that I've been able to hear any night flight calls at my house. The cricket and katydid noise is usually too intense to hear much, plus I'm not in a great position to hear many flight calls anyway. This morning must have been a combination of excellent migration conditions and cold enough to drastically reduce insect noise because I was able to hear a number of thrush calls from the end of the driveway. Below is the list:
Matt Hafner Forest Hill, MD
Putnam house (private), Harford, US-MD Sep 11, 2012 6:00 AM - 6:05 AM Protocol: Stationary Comments: Standing at the edge of the driveway. First night this fall that a dawn descent of thrushes has been noticeable. Probably a combination of excellent migration conditions and being cold enough to shut up the crickets and katydids. 4 species
Veery X Approximately 50 calls in 5 minutes. I think not many birds were actually involved though. Many seemed to be calling from the ground. Swainson's Thrush X Approximately 30 calls in 5 minutes. I think not many birds were actually involved though. Many seemed to be calling from the ground. Rose-breasted Grosbeak 1 3 calls that crossed the sky so I suspect it was one bird Bobolink 1 5 calls crossing the sky, not as confident it was only one bird
