I birded Assateague yesterday afternoon and today with a fair amount of slow periods, but nevertheless, I still managed to see a nice collection of birds.
Bayside, 10/5:
White-rumped Sandpiper Pectoral Sandpiper Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - First-of-season - many around the island. Red-breasted Nuthatch - 10 Brown Creeper - FOS Tennessee Warbler Orange-crowned Warbler - FOS Bay-breasted Warbler Yellow Warbler Pine Siskin - FOY - small groups scattered around the island now
Bayside Campground, 10/5: American Golden Plover Red-breasted Merganser - 9 - FOS Red-breasted Nuthatch - 20
This morning, I birded Bayside again and was joined by Jim Stasz, Scott Housten, Mark Rodriguez, and Mike Burchett. The point was not as active, but we managed to see a few warblers, more Pine Siskins, a Bobolink, Brant, and a Common Loon. I also had a flyover Dickcissel, which briefly landed in a nearby cedar.
Other highlights from today included Dark-eyed Juncos, a Prairie Warbler, Blue-headed Vireo, Nashville Warbler, and groups of Surf Scoters flying south over the ocean. There's also been 3-4 Peregrine Falcons, mainly concentrated in the area between the state park and the ranger station.
I hope everyone will be out birding in the rain tomorrow!
