After a lovely morning up at Town Hill hawk watch with some very convivial Allegany bird club members-
Bald Eagles
Sharp-shinned hawks
Cooper's Hawk
Osprey
Red-tailed Hawk -
I eventually made my way over to Big Pool just wondering if the Great White Heron was still around. I parked by Beaver Pond and quickly saw a very large white bird across the water. As I yanked my scope out of the car, the very large white bird used its very large white wings and flew away. I high-tailed it up to the towpath, hoping to spot the bird and I did. Indeed it was the white morph. After checking my field guide, I looked up and the bird was gone. Naturally. I continued up the towpath with my head tilted to the left at a 45-degree angle. Nothing but Canada Geese in the pond. Naturally. Finally I decided to head back and now my head was tilted 45-degrees to the right. Then a blur of white flew by me on the left. The bird had been in Big Pool and stayed on my side, quite close actually. A nice treat to a very nice day.
