Subject: [MDBirding] '12 to early '13 Christmas Bird Count dates now posted on MOS Website

The 2012 to early 2013 Maryland and nearby area Audubon Christmas Bird
Count (CBC) dates have now been posted to the MOS Website at
http://www.mdbirds.org/counts/xmas/xmas.html. This listing provides the
date for each count plus the compilers name and their contact info. This
same list can also be found in the upcoming Nov/Dec '12 issue of the *
Yellowthroat*.

I have added some nearby Delaware counts to the list this year as well a
couple from the West Virginia panhandle and a few counts in Southern PA
that drift over the border into Maryland a bit. The Baltimore Harbor count
has been discontinued but a new count in Baltimore County called Loch Raven
and centered near Cockeysville will take place on Sunday, Dec 16. As of
late Sep, the Chincoteague NWR count had no compiler. The count is still
listed under its traditional date of Dec 29. If interested in compiling
(and assuming the position has not been filled yet), please contact Teta
Kain at <tkdragonrun7...>

With MOS Webmaster John Christy's help, I created and added a couple maps
of the count circles to MOS website that can be downloaded to your computer
and opened in Google Earth. If interested, you can zoom in to a particular
count circle and explore an aerial view of terrain and habitat. If you
don't have Google Earth, you will find a link on the webpage to download it.

One last plug (and I have no official connection to Audubon or these
counts) to those on this list who have never participated on a CBC before,
if you have some time, don't hesitate to contact one of compilers and help
with a count near you. I help out with a couple of counts near me in
Montgomery County each year. I find them a nice break from the holiday
stress and the count compilers are always appreciative of any help they can
get. If you feel you lack the experience to help, they will pair you up
with a more seasoned birder.

Good birding,
Andy Martin
