I agree with Jim Moore that most probably your bird was a Tennessee Warbler. We had one on the ABA "Rally" in Kiptopeke State Park, VA, last week that was by far the greenest Tennessee Warbler I've ever seen. I don't know enough about Tennessees to comment on their ground feeding style, though. I've never seen a lot of this species around here, and they seem much more abundant in the mid-West and mid-South, especially in the Spring.
The Sibley guide painting of a winter female should be close to what you saw, although I must say that the bird we saw in Kiptopeke was a good deal greener than Sibley portrays.
