This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Monday, October 29, at
noon.

Top birds this week are BLACK-TAILED GODWIT* in VA and a LE CONTE'S
SPARROW* in MD.

Other birds of interest include SNOW GOOSE, RED-THROATED LOON,
AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, GOLDEN EAGLE, HUDSONIAN and MARBLED GODWITS,
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, WESTERN KINGBIRD, CAVE SWALLOW, BLACK-CAPPED
CHICKADEE, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, sparrows including AMERICAN TREE,
CLAY-COLORED, and LARK, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, RED CROSSBILL, and
EVENING GROSBEAK.

A BLACK-TAILED GODWIT* was again seen, and photographed, at Swan Cove,
Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA, on Oct 26.

A LE CONTE'S SPARROW* was found and photographed at the Howard
Conservancy, Howard Co, MD, Oct 25.

SNOW GEESE arrived in numbers this week at Prime Hook NWR, DE.

On Oct 28, 4 RED-THROATED LOONS flew down the Anacostia River at Hains
Point, SE DC.

Five AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were again spotted along Fowler's Beach
Rd, Prime Hook NWR, DE,on Oct 23.

The Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch, Waynesboro, VA, tallied its second GOLDEN
EAGLE of the season on Oct 24. A GOLDEN EAGLE passed the hawk watch at
Kiptopeke SP, Northampton Co, VA, on Oct 23.

A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was photographed at Shearness Pool, Bombay Hook
NWR, DE, on Oct 26. MARBLED GODWITS were found at Chincoteague NWR,
Accomack Co, VA, on Oct 26.

A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD made multiple visits to a feeder in Herndon,
Fairfax Co, VA on Oct 24. On Oct 23 reports of SELASPHORUS HUMMINGBIRD
came from Green Spring Park, Annandale, VA as well as Rockingham Co,
VA. In lower Northumberland Co on VA's Northern Neck, near Wicomico
Church, VA, a SELASPHORUS HUMMINGBIRD has been seen off and on since
late September. A probable RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD has been visiting a yard
in Kent Co, DE (as recently as the morning of Oct 29); to visit,
consult the DE Bird list server.

On Oct 25 a WESTERN KINGBIRD paused for a few moments at the post
office in Cape Charles, Northampton Co, Co, VA, on Oct 25.

On Oct 24, 3 CAVE SWALLOWS were flying between Islands # 1 and 2 on
the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel.

A BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE made it into Cecil Co, MD, on Oct 25.

ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was found in Perryman Park, Aberdeen, Harford
Co, MD on Oct 25.

An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW showed up at a pond on Nine Foot Rd in White
Clay Creek SP, Newark, DE, on Oct 27. CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was one of
a dozen species of sparrow found Oct 23 at Sharp's at Waterford Farm,
Howard Co, MD; others included a late GRASSHOPPER, 3 VESPER, and 2
LINCOLN'S. On Oct 23, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS arrived in number at
Kinder Farm Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD, along with 9 other species,
including VESPER and LINCOLN'S. A LARK SPARROW was found Oct 27 in Dry
Fork, Pittsylvania Co, VA.

An adult male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD continued for the sixth week at
Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, MD, as of Oct 24.

A flyover RED CROSSBILL was reported near Prettyboy Reservoir,
Baltimore Co, MD, Oct 26.

This week EVENING GROSBEAKS joined the influx of winter visitors
(YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, RUBY-CROWNED and
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, HERMIT THRUSHES, PURPLE FINCHES, and PINE
SISKINS). EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Cecil Co yards as well as at
Elk Neck SP Oct 24 and 25. Dozens of birders came to see EVENING
GROSBEAKS at a feeder Woodstock, Howard Co, MD, on Oct 27 and 28.
