Subject: [MDBirding] Vesper Sparrow -- Kenilworth Park, DC

DC/MD Birders,

I was thrilled to find a Vesper Sparrow at Kennilworth Park this morning. It was seen on both sides the deteriorating paved road past the Jersey barrier near the final parking area where the main road dead ends. It was last seen at 10:00 slightly past the fire hydrant with its top painted white on the right side of the road. The bird stayed between here and a bit past the ramshackle structure (old bathroom?) on the left. It was viewed repeatedly at low levels in the small trees of this cutover area. A new DC bird! 3 Purple Finches, Palm Warbler and a Hermit Thrush were also seen at this location.

I visited Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens from 8:15-9:15 and was pleased to find 4 Purple Finches (1 male, 3 brownies), a late Nashville Warbler (spotted by Jack from PG County -- thanks, Jack!), Sapsucker and Winter Wren.

Yesterday afternoon, a brief stop at the LBJ Grove on Columbia Island produced a Blue-headed Vireo and a Pine Warbler associating with a mixed flock. A moment ago when I returned home to Arlington, VA a Magnolia Warbler was working the Holly in the back yard.

Happy birding,

Will McPhail
Arlington, VA
