I took a leisurly swing out to the above trailhead shortly after noon to look for the Red Crossbills, arriving about 1230 and terminating the walk about 1520. I encountered Pete Webb who struck out and another birder with two gals who also struck out.
I thought I'd have a good day, encounter- ing a large, female SS Hawk in my alley way as I departed my house, located just 1 1/2 blocks n. of the old stadium! Last time I saw one of these guys was on a walk down to the local convenience store for a paper, as we were blanketed with a lot of snow; say, 15 yrs ago.
Anyway, I struck out too. Once on the trail, I decided to walk out to the end, which was about 1 1/2 mi. down the way. I was pleased to spot a GRAY CATBIRD as I tried to see a scolding C Wren. As I neared the trail's end, I saw a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK flying thru the last bit of woods. Once at the s. end, I picked out a perched BALD EAGLE across the water in the far woods. Also, I saw a 2nd yr. Bald Eagle actively hunting a cove to my left. As I approached the trail's end, I heard a familiar call and looked up to see some TUNDRA SWAN, flying in 3 separate V's, echeloned right, about 60 or so. As I neared the end of my return, I heard them again and saw a loose gaggle of about 45 more Tundras! Overall, a very quiet day, but invigorating to be out:
PB Grebe~5 DC Cormorant-1 Tundra Swan >100 (see above) Baldpate~8, distant flight Bald Eagle-2 (see above) RS Hawk-1 SS Hawk-near home, headin' out RB Gull~3 Herring Gull-1 RB W'pkr-1 Downy W'pkr-1 Crow spp.~15, occ'l fly-overs C C'dee-~7 heard only C Wren~3, heard only Gray Catbird-1 WT Sparrow~15, couple locations Song Sparrow-2 DE Junco~14, in & out of bushes
Nice to get reacquainted with a trail I've birded going back to 1970--and done my share of mushrooming, as well!! Oh, yeah I almost forgot: over 100 Canada Geese, in several locations. Sheesh...talk about wallpaper!!
