Frederick County Lapland Longspurs continue with Horned Larks in corn stubble along the roads running between Lilypons in the East and New Design Rd. in the West. The stubble was tall enough that finding birds on the ground was quite a challenge and required considerable patience. Eventually we saw at least 13 Longspurs, 8 of them flying and one male perched on a post to give us great scope views. Horned Larks too, of course. And an American Pipit. The sightings were on the North side of Oland Rd., about halfway between Rt. 85 (Buckeystown Rd.) and New Design Rd.
Another notable sighting was of at least 10 Chipping Sparrows at the Bishop Claggett Center at the corner of MD-85 and MD-80. A few White-crowned Sparrows there, also.
Our birding group consisted of Gerry Hawkins of Arlington, VA, Helen Patton of Silver Spring, Gerco Hoogeweg and Donna Quinn of Loudoun County, VA., and myself.
