Over the past few weeks I've seen bluebirds entering our well-used nesting box as if they're checking out a potential roosting spot.
Today, an Eastern Bluebird "discovered" an old Downy Woodpecker hole in a locust close to my house. As the "word spread," more bluebirds showed up and general excitement ensued (among the bluebirds and, quite frankly, in me).
There was a lot of turn-taking as bluebirds entered the hole, spent a minute or two there, and then emerged, allowing the next in line to enter.
This went on for 15 minutes or so. When all were satisfied, the group moved on.
The small picture attached here shows four EABLs, one entering the hole and three waiting.
Anyone know....are they checking out roosting spots or are they mapping for nesting possibilities in the spring?
