Subject: [MDBirding] Fort Smallwood

I missed the big WW Crossbill show that Tim and others saw, but did see double digit numbers during my time at Ft Smallwood. Tim (at least I think it was Tim) alerted several of us to the presence of the Common Redpoll, but it had flown by the time we got there. I did relocate it later in a sweet gum tree next to the marsh area towards the end of the drive in the middle of the scrubby vegetation. Gail took some photos which I hope came out. While looking (unsuccessfully) for the Horned Grebe, I found it again about an hour later between the fort ruins and the water at the point, again in a sweet gum tree. Both times it was loosely associating with a small flock of American Goldfinches (3-4). Several Common Goldeneye and Long-tailed Ducks were nice, too.
