Hi Josh,

I've had several encounters with White-winged Crossbills on the penninsula recently (but have not found any reds). Encounters have been at both Fort Howard and North Point SP, as well as along North Point Rd. The most recent encounter for me was several flocks of White-wing along the Black Marsh Trail at NP (trail at entrance lot). You want to make sure you check ANY birds in the Sweet Gums (the penninsula is inundated with these trees with a bounty of fruit). Also make sure to listen for a sound similar to milk being poured intorice crispies. That crackling is the sound of the crossbills feeding in the Sweet Gum trees. When they really get into it is almost like seeds are raining down from the trees... really something to see.

For the Redpolls I believe they've been seen around the playground at Fort H. Not sure if they've been seen today though.

Jon

I'm finding these reports of finches at Ft Smallwood tantalizing, but I'd rather not cross the Key bridge, or take the long way round I695. I've recently noticed a few reports of Common Redpoll along with Red & White-winged Crossbills from North Point State Park & Ft Howard. Does anyone have any more information that might help my find them besides check Sweetgums and be in the right place at the right time (which I never am)?
Thanks,
