Subject: [MDBirding] RFI - Great Horned Owl "Chitters"

For many months I have been under the assumption I have a neighbor with bad breaks on their truck. On arriving home this evening I heard the break screeching and squealing coming from my back yard and not a vehicle. I never saw the owl, but on reviewing several calls I've come to the conclusion what I'm hearing is just like the agitated chitters of a Great Horned Owl like the one on this recording of screaming chitters http://www.owlpages.com/sounds/Bubo-virginianus-14.mp3 except the chitter lasts a bit longer than this recording.

The sound moved to the woods behind my house and then farther down the block. I've always heard these noises at dusk, dawn and in the evening but have never heard the more typical calls of a GHO near home with one exception about 6 years ago. I know GHOs are in the area as I've heard them calling about a mile away at a metro station.

So, any advice or thoughts on why the screaming chitters are happening repeatedly at one location? Could there be a nest nearby? Is there a typical behavior or disturbance that is known? Obviously I'm going to be making closer examination of rooftops and trees around me in the evenings.

Thanks for your thoughts!
