Subject: [MDBirding] Re: White-winged Crossbills - PG - no luck

I tried yesterday (Friday) morning before work (in the rain) from 7:30-8:10. It was very birdy despite the poor weather, but I had no luck finding any crossbills here. Best bird was a fox sparrow. I may try again tomorrow morning (Sunday), and try a look for the Common Teal in nearby Laurel, unless some other post warrants a chase elsewhere.

Last weekend I had a very targeted effort in the southern half of PG to find a crossbill, and covered about 72 miles by car and 3 on foot, looking at many areas of good habitat but had no luck. I think the Fran Uhler birds represent the first time a crossbill has been seen this winter in PG County on more than one occasion. Pretty slim pickings for such a great irruption, but I hope they stay a bit longer. Problem with that site is a very large area surrounding it has a great abundance of mature Virginia Pines, so there is no reason they would potentially concentrate feeding effort there. The saga for a PG crossbill continues!

Cheers!
