This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, February 24 at
about 10 AM.

Top birds this week are ROSS'S GOOSE (blue morph) in DE, TRUMPETER
SWAN, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, and SANDHILL CRANE in MD, SAY'S PHOEBE in VA,
SUMMER TANAGER and BULLOCK'S ORIOLE in MD.

Other birds of interest include ROSS'S GOOSE, CACKLING GOOSE, EURASIAN
WIGEON, HARLEQUIN DUCK, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, LONG-TAILED DUCK, EARED
GREBE, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, GOLDEN EAGLE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK,
BLACK-HEADED GULL, ICELAND GULL, COMMON RAVEN, TREE SWALLOW, SNOW
BUNTING, crossbills, and COMMON REDPOLL.

A blue morph ROSS'S GOOSE was spotted with a white morph on Feb 24, in
Sussex Co DE, about 10 mi south of Milford along DE Rte 1 near Clifton
Rd. The TRUMPETER SWAN continued through Feb 25 at Cash Lake, Patuxent
Research Refuge South Tract, Prince Georges Co MD. An early
BROAD-WINGED HAWK was seen and heard on Feb 21 at Blackwater NWR,
Dorchester Co MD. Near the intersection of Hunting Creek and Deep
Landing Rds, Calvert Co MD, the SANDHILL CRANE continued with
sightings on Feb 21 and 24. Slightly outside our normal reporting area
in Highland Co VA, a SAY'S PHOEBE was photographed on Feb 24, then
found again on Feb 25. The SUMMER TANAGER has reappeared in a yard on
Martin Rd in Columbia MD (Howard Co), with sightings on Feb 19 and 22.
The immature male BULLOCK'S ORIOLE* continued all week at a feeder in
Harford Co MD.

In addition to those seen in DE (above), the white morph ROSS'S GOOSE
in Owings Mills MD (Baltimore Co) continued all week. CACKLING GEESE
were reported at several locations in MD: on Feb 19 at Lake Artemesia
(Prince George's Co) and at the Spring Rd impoundments (Talbot Co); on
Feb 21 in Calvert Co; and on Feb 24 at Kershner's Pond (Frederick Co)
and Chesapeake Farms (Kent Co). A CACKLING GOOSE was also spotted in
NW DC, on Feb 21, at McMillan Reservoir. EURASIAN WIGEONS were
reported, on Feb 23 at Peerce's Cove, Baltimore Co MD, and on Feb 24
at Loch Raven Reservoir, also Baltimore Co. VA also hosted a EURASIAN
WIGEON, at Chincoteague NWR (Accomack Co) on Feb 24. HARLEQUIN DUCKS
are still hanging around the Ocean City Inlet (Worcester Co MD), with
3 seen on Feb 20. On the Potomac River near the line between NW DC and
Montgomery Co MD, a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen on Feb 23. Off Hains
Point, SW DC, a LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen on Feb 22. At Indian River
Inlet, Sussex Co DE, an EARED GREBE was spotted on Feb 24.

AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS continue to be seen at Blackwater NWR, with 42
counted on Feb 19 and five seen on Feb 24.

Single GOLDEN EAGLES were observed, at Hart-Miller Island (Baltimore
Co MD) on Feb 20, and at Chesapeake Farms on Feb 24. A ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK was reported Feb 24 in the Cedar Creek Rd pine woods, Dorchester
Co MD.

The BLACK-HEADED GULL continued in Hunt Valley town center, Baltimore
Co MD, with a sighting on Feb 24, and another BLACK-HEADED GULL was
seen on Feb 24 in Sussex Co DE, at Wolf Neck STP. Two first-winter
ICELAND GULLS were seen in MD, at the Salisbury landfill, Wicomico Co,
on Feb 19, and at the Eastern Landfill in Baltimore Co on Feb 25.

A COMMON RAVEN was seen over a yard in Woodbine MD, Carroll Co, on Feb
25. Early TREE SWALLOWS were reported from several locations,
including eleven at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co MD, on Feb 25. Fifty
SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at Indian River Inlet on Feb 24.

Crossbill sightings continue to drop off, but several RED CROSSBILLS
were seen Feb 20 and 25 in Calvert Co MD at King's Landing Pk in
Huntingtown. A half-dozen RED CROSSBILLS were spotted at the
Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), Prince George's Co MD,
on Feb 19. Larger numbers of RED CROSSBILLS, up to 20, were seen all
week in Anne Arundel Co MD, at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Refuge
North Tract near Pine Trail. Up to 25 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were
seen in the same area of Patuxent WRR all week. On Feb 25, several
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen at King's Landing Pk. King's Landing
Pk also hosted single COMMON REDPOLLS on Feb 21 and 24, and another
single COMMON REDPOLL was reported at Fort Smallwood Pk, Anne Arundel
Co, on Feb 24.
