I visited Irvine Nature Center to see/hear American Woodcocks (AMWO) tonight and found three birds in the central meadow. They started calling at 6:19 with the first display flight at 6:32.
Just before sunset I found several small owl pellets and remains below the trail signpost on the east end of the central meadow. I thought perhaps a small owl had used that spot during the night... maybe?!? A short time later, at 6:36, I was thrilled by the adult male Short-eared Owl (SEOW) that flew across the field. The AMWOs continued calling as the owl approached.
Other highlights included: a Wilson's Snipe (WISN), 42 Rusty Blackbirds (RUBL) and nice collection of five sparrows.
