Much as it pains me to admit it, when I first saw the Patuxent swan, I noted one field mark militating against that identification: the juncture of the forehead to the bill, which should form a crisp V, rather than a U. And darned if the head on shot I got didn't show a U rather than a V. I attributed that to distance, heat shimmer, and assorted other stupid reasons. You can see the shot below, and I need to go back an alter that entry.
