I base the "fos" observation on it being in full breeding plumage, and every year I seem to notice my fos CHSP at our feeders!. It is in full breeding plumage, a beauty. Last year's fos was my earliest ever (3-6-12), so this one is not very close.

I still don't know why we have them when they are scarce all around the rest of the area. They seem to love our neighborhood, a mix of large grassy lots and mixed woods, with some farm fields scattered around. I actually found my first Chipping Sparrow nest for our yard (after the leaves fell in November), in one of the small Hawthorn trees I planted about 5-6 years ago (by small, I mean perhaps 5-6 ft. tall). I planted about 6 of these trees, along with a row of crabapples, to provide a food source and a nesting place for the local birds. Seems to be starting to pay off.
