Subject: [MDBirding] Odd Bird Behavior - Pine Needles andthe Killer Crow

Hi Everyone,

Iwitnessedsome odd bird behavior recently.

1) At McMillan Reservoir I got to watch two American Coots walking on the rocky shore really close to the west fence. While it was cool to see the huge feet and toes, their feeding behavior was amazing. After picking though some strange white stuff (poop?), they both ate old, dry pine needles?!? These pine needles washed up from across the north side of the reservoir where a number of large pine trees grow.

2) Today at Anacostia Park along the river, there was a large group of Ring-billed Gulls. One of the birds (a relatively young one) had blood-stained breast plumage. I drove closer to get a better and look and was surprised to see a crow fly over and try to attack the Gull. The poor Gull flew up before the attack, but the crow continued by chasing the gull around. This continued for a couple of minutes as theinsistent crow bother the gull. I cant decided if the crow was the reason for the gull being injured, or if the crow noticed the blood and wanted tohastenit's demise... I felt bad for the gull, but left it to its fate...

Strange stuff.
