Subject: Shenandoah NP on Columbus Day weekend
Reply-To: dacol@abyss.nrl.navy.mil

Thanks to a friend who made reservations more than an year ago i got
to stay at Skyland in the Shenandoah Nattiona Park over this gorgeous
weekend.

The park was crowded as expected for this time of the year but, as usual,
if one walks more than a mile from the Skyline drive it is quite
bearable. Saw several large mixed flocks of warblers with Blue-headed Vireo
and Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Saw one of the Peregerine Falcons that nest
at the Stony Man Mtn harass a passing Red-tailed Hawk. No hawk
flights there this weekend, winds from the south almost all the time.
Highlight was a Black Bear feeding close to the Stony Man Nature Trail.
2nd bear I have seen at SNP and third one I have ever seen in the wild.
Apparently october is the month to see bears at SNP since there were
numerous sightings recorded at the wildlife sightings book at
Big Meadows (it could be because of the higher number of visitors
but I suspect it may also be that the bears are more active now in
preparation for the winter).
