On Thursday, December 18, 1997, Marshall Iliff, Mark Hoffman, and George Jett visited my office at Liberty Reservoir to check for crossbills. See Mark Hoffman's posting for their sightings. In addition to their sightings, around 1430, I had a flock of 10 Red Crossbills fly into the tops of the White Pines and feed on the pine cones. They stayed for about 10 minutes, then took flight circling over the buildings, constantly calling "jip, jip ,jip......" The Reservoir Natural Resources Office is located at 5685 Oakland Road in Eldersburg, Carroll County. I'm there Monday through Thursday from 8AM to 6PM. Feel free to stop in while I'm there. Unfortunately, the highly nomadic crossbills may decide not to be there. Please note that there are "No Parking" signs along that stretch of Oakland Road except near the end of the road. AFTERTHOUGHT: There is no reason to think that this is the only watershed location where there are crossbills. They could be at any of the pine/spruce/hemlock/cedar locations at either Liberty, Loch Raven, or Prettyboy Reservoirs.
