In the Liberty Lake area, I (and others) saw about 20 Red Crossbills Dec 27 and Dec 28 at the Pine Knob Rd location (about a mile east of Rt 32) where Darius Ecker reported 20 Reds and one WW on Dec 26. At one point, the Red Crossbills there were feeding in a Virginia pine instead of their usual white pines. My sightings there have been around noon. At the Deer Park Rd location, others saw both Crossbills Dec 27 in the morning. On Dec 28, I, along with at least 12 other birders (!) from various counties, saw both species again in the morning. (I saw 2 White-wings and about 15 Reds. I'm sure there are more.) It appears it is best to get to this location before 10:00 AM. I've stopped a few times in the afternoon without any luck. I returned, Dec 28, to the Gunpowder Rd 1/2 mile north of Beckleysville Rd in NW Balto Co, where I had 5 White-winged Crossbills Dec 26. I stayed about an hour w/o any Crossbills. I also made a semi-circle around the north side of Prettyboy reservoir, stopping here and there without Crossbills. The Virginia pines on Spook Hill Rd do look pretty cone-heavy. What a marvelous event this invasion is! Steve Sanford
