Ken--
tyler and I joined a zillion other birders today, Tuesday, from
dawn to noon in looking for the yellow-billed loon. No sign of it at
all, and even Marshall showing up couldn't make it happen. Of course,
there's a lot of water around that one just can't get down to, but
everyone was pretty disappointed.
However, Rick Blom did say that the common gull has been seen daily
through Monday, and several folks were going for it after they left
the non-loon site. The problem seems to be that they aren't
generating power on any regular schedule (that we can fathom), so the
gulls all disperse until they hear those magic sirens, then come
a'flocking. Bummer that you missed it--Tyler and I were there
Saturday morning, early, and had it sitting and flying under us at
the dam, and re-found it after it'd left for a while. There's one
immature ring-billed gull that can fool you, until you get a good
look at its immaculate white rump. Good luck this time! Jane and
Tyler
