At ca. 09.00 two of us were waiting for crossbills at Pine Knob Road (crossbills: 2 fly overs of vocal reds, 1 fly over by a group with muted calls - spp? and a lone individual - spp?), when we heard a raven call several times. The call was a very deep 'kronk', quite unlike the calls of the American crows calling atabout the same time. The bird was off to the north, towards the lake. As an aside, the calls of the raven in UK are generally deeper than those of the ravens I have heard previously in Maryland (the western sections). A typical call from a UK bird is often reminiscent of a large old pig grunting. The bird I heard this morning had such a call. I would be interested to know if any anyone else hears this bird.
