Could anybody give us details on either the displaying Woodcock at Hughes Hollow or elsewhere in MD. or VA suburbs? We have a friend coming in from California who has never seen Woodcock and we thought we could deliver. However we just scouted Huntley Meadows at the "regular spot" along the trail from the Telegraph Rd. entrance and were skunked -- ideal conditions, too -- and this makes us think they may not be there this year. (First time in ten years, btw, missing WC there on a warm, calm night in early April). Since our Woodcockless friend will only have one night to attempt this bird, we think a trip to a place where they are known to be displaying is in order. I recall that a number of folks have seen them this year at Hughes Hollow past the impoundments -- but how far? Past the spruce stand? Or...? Any other sites would be appreciated as well. While we cannot guarantee weather conditions, at least as regards the birds themselves we think we had better go where they have been seen this year. Huntley Meadows did deliver, btw, with Red-headed WP, American Bittern and King Rail. Cheers, and thanks, Gail Mackiernan and Barry Cooper gail@umdd.umd.edu
