Hi Arlene ! We heard the Least Bittern calling from the North Ridge Trail, next to Richardson's Pond. We had just come down the steps and had looked over the pond, then we started walking toward the Duncan's Pond Trail when the bittern called several times from the pond. I have heard them there in previous years, too. If you're not familiar with the call, it sounds very much like a Black-billed Cuckoo ... and it's a quite loud call. The "More Birding by Ear" (Eastern) tape/CD does a good treatment of the calls .. comparing and contrasting the LIBI and the BBCU. I heard on Sunday that WOTHs came in during the week. They were sure silent on Saturday. It was sort of cool and rainy ... maybe they forgot it was spring!
