We went to the Enid Haupt Garden at the Smithsonian this morning ( got
there about 7 am) to look for the Virginia rail. We met Linda and Lydia from the
Montgomery Chapter MOS (lucky for us). We didn't find the bird, but after being
there for about an hour, Linda did. The bird was not in the garden, but rather
was just outside the garden on Independence in the shrubbery. We were surprised
to find it was sitting right in front of where we had parked. We could have
watched it from our coach. We watched the bird for about an hour from the
sidewalk and took pictures. It didn't seem to be bothered by us or other passers
by. As noted by others, one of the wings seemed to be held above the other. The
wing didn't look normal.
