Loughlin" <WILDSIDENT@AOL.COM> To: BIRDCHAT@LISTSERV.ARIZONA.EDU A pair of Bewick's Wrens were seen and observed for quite a while on the Boardwalk Trail at Bombay Hook NWR in DE on Sunday 8/16. After observing House Wrens in the forest area near the boardwalk, and Marsh Wrens in the tall grasses, a novice birder asked what the "different" wrens were flitting along the edge of the grasses next to the boardwalk. There were two wrens obviously larger than the Marsh Wrens. My first thought was Carolina. But I was not comfortable with that call, something didn't fit. We noted a very thin, white eyeline, a darker bill (upper mandible), much whiter breast and belly with the only "buffiness" on the belly being near the tail. Then it showed us its tail. Darker in top... with white tips, and a very definite white pattern under the tail. David Sarkozi, a visiting TX birder called what I was thinking, but hesitant to call: Bewick's Wren. After much more study of the two very cooperative birds we were pleased with this conclusion... a lifer for me, and the other PA birders in our group of ten. Good birding!
