Gemma,

Thanks very much for the offer. I wish I could go! But, alas, I'm committed
to staying closer to home, so I'll probably divide my birding time into two
mornings at local parks. Please let me know what you see so I can live
vicariously through you guys.

Below you'll find direx to the part of Rock Creek Park I mentioned. Let me
know if you have questions. The copy below is copied from a message I got
from Ron Silverman, who also wanted to know where I'd been. Happy hunting at
the Hook!

There are two ways to get to the hiker/biker path. The easiest may be to go
to the Lake Frank parking lot: From the Bel Pre Rd. intersection, take
Norbeck--Route 28--northwest? toward Viers Mill Rd. You'll pass the Rock
Creek Shopping Center on the left and Flower Valley subdivision on the
right. Then you have woods on both sides of the road--Rock Creek Park. You
actually drive over the path when you pass over the large bridge. BEFORE you
reach the traffic light at Gude Drive, you will take a right on Avery Rd.
Take windy Avery about 1/2 mile until you see a brown sign on the right for
the Lake Frank parking lot. Just before you reach this sign, though, you
will cross the path. The stretch I bird is on the right. Park in the parking
lot, then backtrack to the road and the path. There actually might just be a
path from the parking lot, though I don't know of one.

I usually park at Old Baltimore Rd. because it's nearer to my house. Coming
from Rockville High School on Old Balt. Rd., you soon dip down hill into the
woods. After you cross a bridge, the path crosses the road. From this point,
I take the path on the left side. The distance between Old Balt. Rd. and
Avery via this path is maybe about a mile (maybe a bit less?). But there's
no parking lot on Old Balt. Rd. and you must park along the side of the busy
road. Parking at Lake Frank actually puts you nearer to the birdier
stretches of the path.

Especially on weekends, early morning is best because there are a good
number of bikers at other times.
