Hi, Back after a few days away. This afternoon I went to Point Lookout Park in St. Mary's County, Md. We saw the immature Wood Stork snoozing at the edge of the (large) pool north of the point parking lot, aka the usual place. It is such a goofy looking bird. Also in the pool was an immature Mute Swan. We also saw 11 Brown Pelicans in groups of 2, 5, and 4, flying over the bay and even rounding the point and heading up the Potomac River Cloudless Sulphurs (Phoebis sennae) were all over the point area. I did a one minute count looking out in to the bay. Through binoculars I counted 42 in 60 seconds, all heading in a generally easterly direction. We were there for at least an hour, and the sulphurs were coming through at about the same rate during our entire stay. (You do the math). I have never seen anything approaching such numbers of this species in the northeast before. I was paying attention more to these and other butterflies than I was to the stork!
