A shorebird morning...

Fran and I were supposed to go out today on Armas Hill's pelagic trip out of
Lewes, DE. Since she didn't get home from Florida until late yesterday,
however, we decided to sleep in and take a pass on the pelagic...as much
as we wanted to go, neither of us had the energy.

So as not to waste the day, however, we swung over to Queen Anne's
County this morning, to the turf farm on John Brown Road. On the north
side of the road we had a lone BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER feeding in
the grass with about 7 KILLDEER, close enough to the road so the heat
waves rising off the field didn't interfere at all with our views this bird that
was a lifer for both of us!

On the south side of the road, so far distant that they were nearing the limit
of our incredulity, we scoped out a large group (at least 15-20 birds) of
feeding birds, two of which we identified as were AMERICAN GOLDEN-
PLOVERS, and the balance KILLDEER.

The plover was a state bird for Fran and a year bird for both of us, so we
felt some better at least for having missed the pelagic trip.

Best,
Norm
