Marcia,

The phila. vireo at the Rock Creek Park maintenance yard 9.9 was closely
observed in the company of a couple of red-eyes. the underparts of the two
REs were bright white, contrasting sharply with the phila's pale yellow.
The REs were also noticeably larger then the phila (peterson lists them at
15 cm. vs. 12cm.). Of course, comparison of two similar species is always
facilitated by seeing them together ...

To the gang at large: Speaking of Philadelphia Vireos, I have a
question about differentiating fall birds from Red-eyeds. If the
crown patch/eye stripe area is not visible - say, viewing the bird
from below - is it possible to reliably separate the two species in
the field based on underpart color, overall size, and bill length?
Any pointers much appreciated.
