Tyler Thanks for the note. I thought it was state property. I would not have sent people to the location had I known. I did not walk on the soybeans and do not want us to lose access because of a careless birder. The skimmer was a surprise and I wanted to share it. George >>> Tyler Bell <bell@say.acnatsci.org> 09/17/98 11:37am >>> Ospreyers: FYI, the farm at the end of Long Neck Rd. in Scotland, MD is private property. Because Marty Cribb knows the owner, who lives in the VA home, we have access to it. Please don't abuse the privelege. While you're there, leave some obvious bird material on the dash so it can be seen from outside of the car (ie a field guide). That said, the best birding locations on the property are either right near the house on the left side of the trail leading away from the parking area and the point. Next to the trailer there is a nice weedy area where multitudes of sparrows may be found. If you continue down the trail you will run into the soy field. Follow the edge of the field to the right and work your way along until the soy ends. At this point you have two options: left or right. If you continue to the right you will eventually come to a small break in the phragmites that allows you to look off to the right or across the marsh. Be careful where you step as there are some nasty holes where you can sink up to your knees in black goo! If you turn left at the soy end, you will come to some openings that look out onto the pond and some small finger-shaped islands of dirt clods. If you work your way in the direction of the black-goo area you will come to a break in the foliage where you can walk down to the waters' edge. You can set up your tripod there and scan for shorebirds. This is one of the few locations in St. Mary's County where you can reliably find shorebirds. Good luck! -- Good Birding! ...and all this science, Tyler Bell I don't understand, It's mailto:bell@say.acnatsci.org just my job five days a week.
