During the Fall Bird Count in Carroll County on Saturday I spent the morning at McKeldin Area of Patapsco Valley State Park. It was the best day yet this fall for migrant passerines including 11 species of warblers. Here is a run-down of the non-resident songbirds: Pewee 7, Acadian Flycatcher 2 (heard calling, not singing), Swainson's Thrush 1 (flew over calling), Wood Thrush 2 (heard calling), Catbird 1, Yellow-throated Vireo 3 (heard singing or calling), Philadelphia Vireo 1, Red-eyed Vireo 13 (including 1 singing), Parula 6, Chestnut-sided Warbler 5, Magnolia Warbler 9, Black-throated Blue 4, Black-throated Green 3, Blackburnian Warbler 2, Bay-breasted Warbler 1, Black-&-white 9, Redstart 1 (incredibly my only one so far this fall in Carroll), Northern Waterthrush 1, Yellowthroat 1, Scarlet Tanager 2. At Piney Run Park were 7 species of ducks including the first Wigeon of the season and a summering Ring-necked Duck, and 5 species of herons including an immature Black-crowned Night-Heron which is rare here. Shorebirds included the first Snipe of the season at a pond in Westminster. The Harveys had a Peregrine over their house in Sykesville. Other observers added Prairie and Wilson's warblers to the total and collectively we found 96 species for the day. Bob Ringler
