Dona, You might consider the Maryland Ornithological Society, Montgomery County Chapter. They (and all the other 15 chapters of MOS) have an excellent program of monthly meetings and a wide array of field trips for folks at all levels of expertise. If you really want to learn about identification, go on a field trip and when you hear a bird identified, ask the identifier what it was they saw or heard that allowed them to identify the species. This is an allowable question on field trips, one I wish were asked more often, and one a good field trip leader will welcome, 'cause it lets him or her to show off their ID skills. If you would like more information on MOS, ask me or go to the MOS web page at: http://www2.ari.net/saunderf/mos/mos.html Good birding!
