Well, the latest cold front is shaking the later migrants loose and this morning yielded good results at Riverbend Park, Great Falls, VA. It looks like Part II of the neo-tropical migration has begun! A Wood Thrush called as I got out of the car at the Nature Center this morning, 24 Sept 98 about 0715. It was very foggy about 30 feet up and the tops of the trees were quite hazy. Still, I peered into the canopy but found only a Titmouse. Then, after a few seconds a flycatcher appeared and then another. I caught them in my bins - E. Peewees. Soon, 6 Peewees were darting this way and that (they just dropped in from the fog!) in the shrouded canopy above the parking lot. I noticed that a few smaller birds joined them: a Mag, Blackburnian and Black-throated Green, then a Scarlet Tan. The darting birds quickly moved off to the left - south - and were gone. Only a DeeDee called afterwards. I then walked left the short distance to the start of the trail for the meadow and began a very pleasant morning. The highlights were... your standard 5 woodpeckers E.
