Greg Excuse the silly question but... did you not get an opportunity to look at the bill front on? The reason I ask is because I have seen the bird in South Africa (a rarity there as well) and the bill tip was broader than the rest of bill. On the other hand I did see the bird in very good light and pretty close (10-15m) away with a scope. The rest of the field marks (it was a long time ago) were pretty easy to pick out and the bird stood out amongst the thousands of Curlew Sandpipers (not rarities!). Tim Boucher Chevy Chase, MD
