HI all -- Barry and I went out to Layhill Park, MD, this morning to see if any interesting birds were about. Figured the hot weather and unfavorable winds would mean Rock Creek would be slow, and for Layhill we don't have to fight rush hour traffic! Anyway, a few things about -- almost the first bird we saw near the south parking lot was a nice LINCOLN'S SPARROW. Other interesting sightings included the autumn's first WINTER WREN, a flyover but well-seen RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, and a smattering of other migrants: Gray-cheeked Thrush (1), Swainson's Thrush (1), Rose-breasted Grosbeak (3), Canada (1), Black-throated Green (1), Magnolia (3), Yellow-rumped (1), Parula (1), Redstart (3), Yellowthroat (15), Chestnut-sided (1) Warblers, Scarlet Tanager (1), Eastern Phoebe (4), Swamp Sparrow (3), White-throated Sparrow (6), Indigo Bunting (6). There was a steady flight of Blue Jays, Robins and Flickers going south all morning. Gail Mackiernan and Barry Cooper gail@umdd.umd.edu
