Riverbend Park, Fairfax County. Located off of Rte 7, a few minutes west of Great Falls. Wednesday, 30 Sep 98. 07:15 - 09:45. Cloudy, southerly breeze, temps starting in the low 60's, ending high 70's. Light sprinkle, and it was raining hard nearby. In attendance were, Kurt Gaskill, Mike Day, and myself. All told, 44 species for the day. It started out much less promising than it finished. Very gloomy and dark. Eventually things brightened up. Today marked a few firsts of the season for me, including RC Kinglet (2), Yellow-rumps(2), and White-throated Sparrows(2-3). As well as some lingering migrants, including Swainson's thrush (1), RB Grosbeak(1 first fall male), Scarlet Tanager(1 male), BTB (1 female), red-eyed vireos (2), indigo buntings (12). Other notables not included above: 3 Cormorants 1 immature Sharpie, hunting blue jays and goldfinches, but coming up empty 20 Chimney swifts 4 woodpecker species 2 phoebes lots of blue jays chicks, tits and WB nuts 1 house wren 15 or more bluebirds 10 catbirds 2 thrashers 2 palm warblers 12 common yellowthroats 4 chipping sparrows 1 song sparrow 1 swamp sparrow 1000 or more grackles, many without much of a tail Cheers, Todd Day Jeffersonton, VA BlkVulture@AOL.com
