Les, a few years back, I had hanging around my yard an adult Goshawk that had escaped from a falconer . One characteristic I learned to watch for is a rowing action of the wings when the bird is seen in profile: it looks like the bird reaches forward, then back, on every wingbeat. Very powerful. Also the eye stripe and black cap of an adult should be visible in profile. Does this sound like your bird?
