Bob,

I had a similar situation happen to me.  Our cabin in WV was also being
Piliated pounded.  First, I called an exterminator to have them check for
termites in the wood,  just on the chance the birds were feeding.  Once I'd
ruled that out I just put a fresh coat of paint over the area and that
seemed to stop it.  If the area hasn't been painted or stained in a while
you might try replacing the damaged wood and covering it with several good
coats of paint or stain.
