We're still waiting for a few send-in returns, but the preliminary results look as if we had 87 species, with few rarities. I haven't tallied the numbers for the common birds, so I don't have a feel for the overall totals, but in talking to folks at our tally rally (which, I think, was really superb!) I got the feeling that numbers were low, especially of commoner species. I know that I only recorded (for my party) a single Blue Jay, and only 2 American Goldfinches!. On the brighter side, our party had 2 Chipping Sparrows (the only ones seen on the count), 3 Savannah Sparrows (getting harder to find), and [once again] a single Merlin (also the only one on the count). We spent 2 hours in pre-dawn owling, recording nothing better than a Red Fox, Gray Squirrel and a few deer. Seems the wind kept the owls quiet, but we did get a Great-horned Owl later in the morning, being harrassed by crows till it flew from a large cedar tree to better conditions in deeper woods. Mammals of note: 5 Red Foxes during the day in our area, 1 large beaver, and the largest herd of deer I've ever encountered (perhaps 40-60 near the Ag. Farm Park in Derwood). I will update further as more folks send in their sheets, and I start compiling. Rick Sussman Ashton,MD Warblerick@aol.com
