I started the New Year out right this year, by traveling to CBBT #4 and adding Black-tailed Gull to my life list. Only seven birders were there in the afternoon, including the North Carolina birders who reported two birds on Dec. 31. We were able to find one Black-tailed far offshore mid-afternoon, but just before leaving at 4:30pm, one of the Carolinians spotted a pristine adult bird perched close by on the rocks, which provided a most satisfactory look including the tail band. They had seen it the previous day in about the same location, in the southeast corner of the island (near the building). Among the 2,000 or so gulls on or near island 4, were some Bonapartes, Laughing and at least one Lesser Black-Backed. Small numbers of Purple Sandpipers, Oldsqaws, Surf Scoters, Red-Br. Mergansers and Great and Double- Cr. Cormorants were also present. Ralph Wall Great Falls, Va.
