North, to Powder
Mill Road-Beltsville exit. Turn right (east) onto Powder Mill Road and
stay on Powder Mill Road (approx. 2 miles) until you reach the
intersection of Route. 197 and Powder Mill. Straight ahead is the main
gate of Patuxent.. Follow entry road into Patuxent. 

to Laurel exit,
Route 197. Turn left on Route 197. Follow 197 approximately 1 1/2 miles
to main gate on left (opposite intersection with Powder Mill Road).
Follow entry road into Patuxent.

.....though I doubt very much that Hawai'ians would agree that the
native names for birds such as the "alala" are "obsolete"....
