Two of the four swans several of us have been looking at with
suspicion at Conowingo were seen well today by Gene Scarpulla and Beth
Olsen and showed strong indication of being Trumpeters. They spend most of
their time behind the island directly below the dam and are hard to see
(and di not show while I was there).
The birds are quite gray, have large bills with extensive black at
the base and pinkish saddles, and show the head and bill feathering pattern
of Trumpeters. Gene is currently having e-mail problems and asked me to
post this.
I have seen the birds thtee times but at much greater distances.
Now that the wter in the rocks on the Cecil side has frozen, the birds seem
to have moved out into the open water.
