Heads up anyone going to Conowingo! Not quite in the same league as the Pacific Loon, but it could be in the same places. I was scoping the river in front of my house in Peach Bottom Village, southern Lancaster County, PA, 2 miles north of the Maryland border. I was scanning the Common Mergansers (estimated 5500), looking for anything different. I had already picked out a few Mallards, Black Ducks, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, 1 Hooded Merganser, and several Common Goldeneye. I found the bird in question and was just zooming in on it went it flew downriver and around the bend, out of sight. I was not able to catch up with it. It looked very good for a female eider, both in the brief look I had of it on the water and while it was in flight with the mergs. My best guess would be female King Eider. I plan to go back out tomorrow morning. The bird was upriver from the first railroad tunnel when I first saw it, toward the atomic plant at mid-river. It flew downriver past the first tunnel toward Maryland when I lost it. Drop me an e-mail if you'd like to join me tomorrow. If you need to call me, please do so before 9:00 pm tonight or between 7 and 8 am tomorrow. I plan to go out around 8:00 am, which will hopefully provide good light, no heat shimmer, and low winds. A spotting scope is a necessity. This could be a good one..........
